Local veterans Tony Hettler and Pat Nardo will speak at a Veterans Day ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Steven J. Underwood Memorial Park in Des Moines, where families, friends and neighbors are invited to gather in recognition of military service.
A reception begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the ceremony at 11:11 a.m., at the park at 21800 20th Ave South (map below).
The program will include the sound of a bugle and the raising of the American flag. Boy Scout Troop 361 will post the colors.
The gathering offers a chance to hear from local veterans and share a moment of reflection. The flyer invites attendees to “pause, reflect, and give thanks.”
Former Des Moines Mayor/Councilmember Matt Mahoney is spearheading the event, according to the flyer, which credits volunteers, community partners and supporters with making the observance possible.
Supporters include the city of Des Moines, the Linscott, Leonard and Wilkins families, Nadya Curtis, Bettina Carey, Tricia Phillips, Randall Williams and Auntie Irene’s.
