Advanced certified scuba divers are invited to mark the shortest day of the year with a Winter Solstice Dive scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 21, at Saltwater State Park in Des Moines.

The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to advanced certified divers only, according to Friends of Saltwater State Park, which is organizing the dive.

Participants will have the opportunity to log winter dives at the marine park, weather permitting, and may take part in a possible two tank dive.

Organizers also encourage underwater photography during the event.

In addition to recreational diving, the event will offer community science opportunities through REEF surveys and marine life identification tools. Friends of Saltwater State Park said divers interested in taking the next level REEF quiz should indicate their interest in advance so materials can be provided.

The dive is intended to bring together members of the regional diving community to explore and learn more about the underwater environment at Saltwater State Park.
