Three local officials joined students at Des Moines Elementary this week to spotlight the importance of after-school programming as part of the nationwide Lights on Afterschool initiative.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, Des Moines Mayor Traci Buxton, Highline School Board President Joe Van and State Sen. Claire Wilson participated in a Girls on the Run practice alongside elementary students. Girls on the Run Puget Sound hosted the event to showcase its programming, which combines running activities with lessons that build self-confidence and social-emotional skills.

The visiting officials joined in on the day’s curriculum, which included classroom discussion, indoor activities and laps outside, according to Girls on the Run Puget Sound.

Program leaders Andrea Gomes Morrison, executive director, and Jessica Baloun, program coordinator, also attended to highlight how after-school programs benefit both students and families.

Girls on the Run International is a nonprofit serving third through eighth grade girls across North America. The Puget Sound chapter is one of many local affiliates promoting physical activity, personal growth and teamwork through running-based lessons.

Lights on Afterschool, celebrated nationwide, raises awareness about the impact of after-school programs on youth and communities.
