The Port of Seattle Commission has taken a significant step toward permanently designating North SeaTac Park (NSTP) for recreational use, following the passage of an order on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024.

“Order 2024-12” is the result of successful advocacy efforts by grassroots organizers that led to the inclusion of critical language in the 2024 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act, made possible through collaboration with U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, U.S. Representative Adam Smith, and the Washington congressional delegation.

The Commission’s order directs staff to begin documenting that NSTP meets the eligibility criteria for permanent protection as outlined in the FAA Reauthorization Act.

“I’m honored to sponsor this order, and we reached this milestone through strong partnerships with our local communities, jurisdictions, and congressional delegation,” said Port of Seattle Commission President Hamdi Mohamed. “Near-airport communities deserve parks and open spaces, and today brings us closer to permanently preserving this one for future generations. Last year, we traveled to Washington, D.C., met with the FAA, and pushed for this legislation. We are deeply grateful to our congressional delegation who brought it over the finish line.”

Port Commissioner Fred Felleman also emphasized the importance of the park to the health and well-being of South King County residents.

“Today’s action affirms the Port Commission’s commitment to South King County communities by establishing the goal of permanently protecting North SeaTac Park for future generations,” Felleman said. “North SeaTac Park is one of the most significant green spaces available to airport communities. The park helps provide cool, clean air and recreational opportunities essential to their health and quality of life.”

The Port Commission will continue discussions about the future of North SeaTac Park with Port leadership, the City of SeaTac, and community stakeholders.
