The Des Moines Police Department is inviting neighborhoods across the city to join National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening police-community relationships and fostering safer neighborhoods.

Billed as “a great night to get to know your neighbors,” National Night Out encourages residents to host block parties, barbecues, and other neighborhood gatherings to promote unity and public safety.

“National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community,” police said.

The campaign, which takes place annually on the first Tuesday in August, is observed in all 50 states, U.S. territories, and military bases around the world. Events often include safety demonstrations, youth activities, visits from law enforcement and emergency personnel, and educational booths.

“Help build a stronger, safer community by giving crime a going away party,” organizers said.
