REMINDER: You can help create the future of Des Moines – attend a Town Hall meeting from 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 9 this Tuesday night, Dec. 9 and be part of “Charting Our Course.”
Charting Our Course is the process of developing a five-year strategic plan for the City of Des Moines. A strategic plan is like a map to guide City decisions, investments, and services. It captures the community’s shared vision for the future and lays out goals and priorities to make that vision real.
Charting Our Course Town Hall Meeting
Join neighbors and city leaders to talk about the future of Des Moines. Everyone is welcome, and everyone’s voice is important! Child care available.
- WHEN: Tuesday, Dec. 9, 6–8 p.m.
- WHERE: Des Moines Elementary School, 23801 16th Ave South (map below).
At this meeting, you will have the opportunity to share your hopes, priorities and ideas to make Des Moines the city you want it to be. The meeting will be facilitated by a strategic planning consultant, who will document everyone’s input.
How Our Community is Contributing to Charting Our Course
Des Moines residents have had multiple opportunities of the past couple of months to weigh in on the plan for the city’s future.
In October, the City hosted five focus groups where community members shared their ideas, hopes and priorities.
Members of the Des Moines Citizens Advisory Board have hosted informal feedback sessions in community gathering places and at community events.
On Nov. 8, the City launched an online survey open to all residents. The survey link is posted on the city website and Facebook page, and has been shared through local schools and organizations. If you have not completed the survey, you can still participate until Dec. 12:

Your Voice, the Community’s Plan
The plan is not the City’s plan, it is the community’s plan. Your voice is the most important element of this process. The plan will reflect what you care about, what you want to see, and what you think Des Moines should become.
How Your Input Will Be Used
After gathering community input, the City Council and staff—working with an independent planning consultant—will build a framework of goals and strategies that reflect your priorities.
The City will share out the plan with the community, and ultimately, the City Council will vote to adopt the plan.
Take part in Charting Our Course and help create the future you want for Des Moines.
