Ring in the New Year on the right foot with a First Day Hike at Saltwater State Park in Des Moines on Monday, Jan. 1, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This family-friendly event is part of Washington State Parks’ annual First Day Hikes program, which offers guided and self-led hikes across more than 30 parks statewide.

The Saltwater hike will cover 1.5 to 2 miles of varied terrain, including asphalt, gravel, and dirt trails with inclines and descents.

While families are welcome, children should be at least 10 years old and capable of managing the mileage.

Hikers can enjoy visiting the beach independently after the hike.

Participants should meet at the Snack Shack in the Beach Parking Lot and bring sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and leashed dogs if desired.

This hike is free to attend, and no Discover Pass is required on New Year’s Day, Washington State Parks’ first free day of 2025. For other park activities, such as snowshoe excursions, trail rides, and scavenger hunts, some registration may be required.

Participants can also collect a free 2025 First Day Hikes pin to commemorate their outing. For more information or potential cancellations, click here or call (253) 661-4956.
