South King Fire will host a free child car seat safety check event on Friday, Jan. 23, aimed at helping families ensure car seats are installed correctly.

The event will run from Noon to 2:30 p.m. at Station 68, located at 1405 S. 312th Street in Federal Way (map below), according to the agency.

Certified technicians will be available to provide hands-on assistance and safety education.

The district said the event is designed to address common installation errors. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 46% of car seats are installed incorrectly.

During the event, technicians will guide caregivers through proper installation, review height and weight requirements and explain when children should transition to the next car seat level.

Families will also have the opportunity to ask questions and confirm that their child is secured properly.

South King Fire encouraged participants to bring both their car seat manual and vehicle owner’s manual if available, along with their child’s current height and weight.

Caregivers are also advised to clear space in the back seat before arriving to allow technicians room to work.

The event is open to families in Federal Way, Des Moines and surrounding south King County communities.
