Who’d a thunk it…. cars were lined up for a block at the start of the Take Back Your Drugs and Shred-it Event last Saturday at the market! Kory Batterman, DMPD Community Service Officer, had to call the department for reinforcements to handle all the traffic. Kory later commented that it was the biggest haul of old medications since the department starting doing the event. You could hear the shred-it truck crunching all day. Congrats to the Des Moines Police Department for putting together this very worthy community event. There were positive comments from all the people who participated. The Farmers Market has agreed to sponsor, and signed on to help the Des Moines Police Foundation with partner Fred Meyers, put on the first annual Shop with a Cop event for 20 local children in need and their families. The children will be escorted by a uniformed member of the Des Moines Police Department to choose gifts for under the Christmas tree. Fred Meyer has agreed to match donations taken in. Look for this donation box at the market’s info booth, Des Moines Police Station, Auntie Irene’s and Marine View Espresso. Music: 3 Guys Band (formerly Saltwater Saints) Food Trucks: Curb Jumper Street Eats, Mini the Dough Nut, Nibbles, & Stella Fiore Pizza Last Saturday 60 people received their $10 vouchers (a record). So far this season the market has issued over $6,000 thru this program. The program issues weekly free $10 vouchers for qualifying seniors. This program is brought to you by partners, the Des Moines Farmers Market and King Conservation District. The vouchers are good for fruits, vegetables and processed food products (bakery items, etc). If you know someone who may qualify, please have them come to the information booth to sign up. There are only two spots left for our annual Chili Cook-Off. If you think you have the best chili recipe around, pick up an application at the information booth or go online to download the application. There is room for only 10 teams this year, so get in gear! Also, don’t forget HYDE Shuttle is providing local door to door transportation to the market for seniors 55 and older and people with disabilities of all ages living in Des Moines, Normandy Park, Burien and this year Sea-Tac.
