The public will have a rare opportunity to step inside the Pacific Northwest’s only dedicated marine animal hospital during a community Open House at Des Moines’ SR3 SeaLife Rescue Center on Saturday, May 2.

According to SR3, the event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its facility located at 22650 Dock Ave South (map below) in the Des Moines Marina.

The annual event offers behind the scenes tours of the center, where staff and volunteers rehabilitate marine mammals.

Visitors will be able to take guided tours of the facility, which typically last about 30 minutes, and speak with staff and volunteers about the work involved in rescuing and caring for marine wildlife.

“Please note that animal viewing will not be part of the tour, but there will still be plenty to see, from our surgical room to our fish kitchen,” organizers said. “Pets are not allowed, so please leave your furry family members at home.”

The open house will also include family-friendly activities for youth and opportunities to purchase adoption kits, t-shirts and other merchandise.

SR3 officials noted the center is not open to the public at other times of the year, making this Open House a unique opportunity for the community to learn about marine wildlife care.

Parking near the Des Moines marina includes paid lots with rates of $2.50 for the first hour and $1.50 for each additional hour, with 50 percent off vouchers available.

Limited free street parking is also available along 6th Ave S. and 7th Ave S. east of the facility.
