The Des Moines Yacht Club, in collaboration with the Wesley Gardens Wood Shop, will once again host the popular Waterland Hydroplane Giveaway at the Pirate Cove event this Saturday, July 20, 2024.
This year’s event will run from Noon – 4 p.m., and will feature 100 free wooden hydroplanes for kids, ready to decorate or race. It is part of the free Waterland Children’s Festival at the Des Moines Field House Park (map below). All decoration supplies will be provided.
The wooden hydroplanes, reminiscent of those built during Seattle’s Seafair week, are perfect for kids to drag behind their bikes or pull across land or water. Des Moines Yacht Club members Bill and Patti Linscott, along with Bobby Stratton of the Wesley Gardens Wood Shop, are in their third year of crafting these hydroplanes for the event.
Each hydroplane includes a special message on the bottom, adding a unique touch to the experience.
The event is sponsored by Destination Des Moines and the Des Moines Legacy Foundation, aiming to provide a day of free fun and creativity for local children.
