The City of Des Moines Public Works Department is coming to the Market! This Saturday and again on July 27, the Public Works staff and equipment will be there to tell their story of what they do. This public outreach to the community will give citizens a chance to see firsthand some of the projects they are currently working on and what has been done in the past. It will also give folks a chance to get to know them a little better and ask any questions they might have. There will be different displays and a variety of equipment plus plenty staff to answer any and all questions. Please stop by and meet the department that works for you. Public Works Photo1 Public Works Photo2 Back by popular demand is the band with a funny name “Flannel Asparagus.” This group of talented gentlemen will also be at the market on July 13, August 3 & 24, September 7 and October 5 & 19. The community group this week is the Girl Scout Troop 50050 who will have a booth to do outreach to the public on their programs. Market Sponsor Corner Friend to Friend America recruits and matches volunteers to visit (one-to-one) with elderly and disabled persons who live in nursing homes, assisted living, retirement homes **new in 2013 we are in Adult Family homes** for the purpose of forming friendships. The volunteer friends make a commitment to visit at least twice a month at their convenience, for a minimum of one year. Anyone may volunteer. This booth space was donated by sponsor the Law Offices of Gehrke, Wegener & Doull. Don’t forget the Des Moines Area Food Bank “Picnic in the Park” continues their free summer lunch program for all school age kids. If you would like to volunteer to help with this program, contact the Food Bank 206-878-2660. Look for them in the grassy area next to the marina office starting at noon. They will be there every Saturday until school starts. New this year is the program to help seniors 85 and older who are using the food bank. When they visit the Des Moines Area Food Bank they will receive a voucher for the market to purchase fresh fruit and produce, this program is paid for by the Des Moines Legacy Foundation, and distributed by the Des Moines Food Bank.
