Construction crews are continuing to make steady progress on the Marina Steps Project in Des Moines, with installation of the southern retaining wall now nearly complete, according to this week’s Des Moines City Manager’s Report.

The report said final structural fill and compaction activities remain on schedule to wrap up by late June. Completion of that work is expected to significantly reduce heavy equipment operations and construction noise for residents living near the project site.

During July, crews will shift their focus to concrete wall construction and installation of electrical infrastructure.

The next phase of work is intended to prepare the site for new waterfront amenities, including steps, accessible walkways and park areas.

This is a $8.5 million waterfront redevelopment effort designed to create a pedestrian-friendly connection between downtown Des Moines and the marina below. The more than 40,000 square foot project will feature a combination of stairs and ADA accessible switchback ramps spanning the site’s 36-foot elevation change, along with seating areas, landscaping and public gathering spaces. Funding includes city issued bonds as well as state grants and other public funding sources.

City officials said construction activities are progressing on schedule as work continues through the summer months.

The new Marina Steps are expected to be completed in December, 2026.
