Mother Nature has dealt WSDOT crews a challenging hand as they try to begin sidewalk improvements along State Route 99 in Des Moines.

“The rainy weather forced our contractor to cancel the work three times over the last month,” officials said.

WSDOT said that it now plans to close the right lane on southbound SR 99/Pacific Highway South between South 224th Street and just north of SR 516 from 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, until 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, for curb upgrades.

South 226th Street also will close where it intersects with SR 99. Signed detours will guide people around the work zone.

During this project, our contractor will upgrade more than 60 curb ramps along SR 99 to modern Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Another phase of the project, scheduled for late spring 2025, will repave two miles of SR 99 between South 200th Street in SeaTac and SR 516 in Des Moines.
