The filing deadline for local elections was Friday, May 21, 2021, and the field for Des Moines City Council’s Aug. 3 Primary Election has 11 candidates running for four seats.

Candidates have until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 24, 2021 to withdraw from the Primary race.

The top two vote-getters for each position will move on to the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

  1. Will there be public forums were we can ask questions of the candidates about issues concerning our city?
    I think that if council meetings have become contentious that the citizenry need to see personally how the candidates respond in public to difficult questions about issues that affect our city. I personally want to see if they are intellegent and can put together a reasoned and factually accurate position to questions.

  2. Do any of the candidates have a position on moving the city away from the red-light camera scam that furnishes a large part of city revenue, more than one million dollars a year from a single camera at the intersection of Kent-Des Mines Road (westbound) and Hwy 99? This camera has NO safety value and amounts to basing the city budget on brazen extortion. Yes, it would take some political courage to raise the issue. Anyone?
