A 58-year-old Des Moines man was shot by a Kent Police officer after allegedly pointing a firearm at himself and family members before fleeing his residence on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025, police said.

The incident began in the Woodmont neighborhood at around 4:45 p.m. on Friday, when Kent Police patrol units responded to assist Des Moines Police with an armed subject in the 27000 block of 10th Ave S. (map below). Authorities said the man left the home on foot after the reported confrontation.

Officers launched a search operation using both drones and foot patrols, while crisis negotiation personnel were deployed to the area, according to police.

The man was later located on a nearby beach, where a Kent police officer shot him during an encounter.

“First aid was immediately provided to the subject by both police and medical personnel that had been staged nearby,” police said in a statement. The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he remains under medical care.

One officer at the scene was injured but was not involved in the use of force. That officer was treated and released from a local hospital.

The Valley Independent Investigative Team (VIIT) is conducting the investigation, and the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol. All further updates will be provided by VIIT, authorities said.
