Another No Kings Demonstration? You Bet!
The Speaker of the House is claiming that there will be a big “Hate America” protest this Saturday. He is correct that there will be a big event, so big that over 2,500 separate demonstrations have been organized around the country.
But hate is not the reason why. Instead, Americans are united that they want No Kings leading the country our forefathers fought to free. If you love America, Seniors for the Constitution and Des Moines Indivisible ask you, your family and friends, to show it by joining them at Big Catch Plaza on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 12-2 p.m.
The shutdown, rising grocery prices, tariffs, and recent federal cuts are affecting millions of hardworking families, including those who depend on critical programs like SNAP and Medicaid. Republicans control both Houses, but they are blaming the Democrats for the shutdown. Democrats are fighting to save healthcare benefits that, if eliminated, will mean many cannot afford the medications they need to survive. The president could become a hero: step in and demand an end to the shutdown that is already hurting so many. But he is choosing to do nothing.
What can we do? We have a voice. We need to use it. At Des Moines’ first No Kings demonstration In June, over 1,600 individuals, young and old, came together in peaceful unity. Signs were creative, everyone was respectful, and people felt safe. Let’s make this rally even bigger!
If you come, you are encouraged to wear something yellow. As the No Kings Team wrote: “People around the world have used color to show collective strength in the face of oppression throughout history. Our movement is no different: We align ourselves with this historic context while taking a step into our shared future. Think of it as a shared symbol.”
Make a sign or wave one of the sponsors’, and if you can, bring cash or shelf-staple donations to the Des Moines Food Bank table at the rally. Our food bank is scrambling to meet increasing need and truly appreciates the community’s support.
And if you’re in the Southcenter vicinity on Saturday afternoon, you are invited to join the Southend Indivisible demonstration, beginning at 2 p.m. near IHOP, 17250 Southcenter Parkway. They scheduled their event so people can participate in both if they wish.
