On Friday, June 20, 2025, officers from the Des Moines and Normandy Park Police Departments joined forces to participate in the Special Olympics Washington Law Enforcement Torch Run, carrying the Flame of Hope through Des Moines in support of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Police Chief Ted Boe of Des Moines and Police Chief Dan Yourkoski of Normandy Park were joined by fellow officers, city staff, and family members as they jogged in solidarity. The torch was then passed to officers from the Kent Police Department, continuing its journey toward the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony in Tacoma.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a nationwide effort led by police departments to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics programs. It celebrates inclusion and showcases the dedication of law enforcement to their communities beyond public safety.
“We’re honored to support such an inspiring cause and the incredible athletes who represent the true spirit of determination and inclusion,” officials said in a joint statement.
The event not only highlighted community collaboration but also celebrated the resilience and achievements of Special Olympics athletes across Washington state.
