The ongoing appeal regarding the demolition of Des Moines’ historic Masonic Home will be heard Tuesday, Oct. 21, beginning at 9 a.m., with proceedings expected to last most of the day and possibly extend into Wednesday, Oct. 22.
According to local preservation advocate Lloyd Lytle Jr., the hearing will be held entirely on Zoom, with a big screen public viewing room also available at Des Moines City Hall.
The case centers on the potential demolition of the century-old structure overlooking Puget Sound. Supporters of preservation have organized fundraising efforts to cover legal costs. Lytle said that between online and offline donations, nearly $40,000 has been raised toward a $50,000 goal through a GoFundMe campaign.
The appeal is one of the final hurdles in determining the fate of the former Masonic Home, which has been at the center of debate between preservationists and developers.
More details about the case can be found in the latest City Manager’s Report, and the Zoom link for the public hearing is available here.
