MITIGATING HAZARD RISKS IN OUR SEWER SYSTEM
Every 5 years the jurisdictions of King County are encouraged to participate in the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP).
This plan is a proactive strategy prepared by state, tribal and local governments to reduce risks and vulnerabilities associated with natural and human-made hazards.
WHY IS HAZARD MITIGATION IMPORTANT?
Natural disasters, aging infrastructure, and improper disposal pose significant threats to our sewer system. Floods, earthquakes, and heavy rains can damage pipes and treatment facilities, while aging infrastructure may lead to cracks, clogs, and overflows. Improper disposal of items like grease and wipes exacerbates these risks, potentially causing blockages and other issues.
OUR COMMITMENT TO MITIGATION
At Midway Sewer District, we prioritize proactive measures to enhance the resilience of our sewer system:
- Regular Inspections: We employ advanced technologies such as CCTV sewer pipe cameras to conduct thorough video inspections, identifying and addressing potential issues before they escalate into emergencies.
- Preventative Maintenance: Through carefully scheduled cleaning and repairs, we ensure that our pipes remain in optimal condition, reducing the likelihood of disruptions and malfunctions.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Recognizing the importance of staying ahead of aging infrastructure, we continually invest in upgrades to strengthen our system and replace outdated components.
We acknowledge that our sewer system represents more than a network of pipes and treatment facilities, it is a crucial element in maintaining the health and well-being of our community. Our dedication extends beyond ensuring basic functionality; we are committed to protecting public health, preserving the environment, and maintaining the seamless operation of our infrastructure through effective hazard mitigation. By prioritizing hazard mitigation, we enhance the reliability of our sewer system and uphold our obligation to the community, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to these essential goals.
