The Waterland Parade will follow a new route this year as organizers adapt to ongoing marina construction and other logistical challenges ahead of the annual event on Saturday, July 18.

According to organizers, the route change was prompted by construction at the Des Moines Marina, the need to maintain access for emergency vehicles, marina visitors and businesses throughout the day, and special events taking place on the waterfront.

Despite the changes, organizers said the parade will remain in the heart of the community and preserve the traditions that have made the event a local favorite for decades.

Organizers said the new route offers several advantages, including a downhill course that parade participants are expected to appreciate. The revised route also allows local businesses and homes to remain accessible while accommodating the thousands of visitors expected to attend the celebration.

New Route

“Our goal is simple: put on the best Waterland Parade possible while working within the realities of construction, business access, and community needs,” organizers said in an announcement.

The Waterland Parade has taken many routes during its 66 year history, according to organizers, who said they appreciate the community’s flexibility as the event adapts to this year’s circumstances.

Organizers emphasized that attendees can still expect the same community spirit, local pride, performers and neighbors coming together to celebrate Des Moines.

New Waterland Block Party

Following the parade, attendees are invited to the family-friendly Waterland Block Party, which will run until about 10 p.m. on the block between South 223rd and South 225th streets in front of the Des Moines Theater.

The event will feature a DJ, a beer garden, children’s activities, special performers and appearances by some of the parade’s participants.

Lavish Roots will serve food inside the Des Moines Theater, and organizers said additional local restaurants are expected to remain open during the event.

Organizers encourage paradegoers to stay after the parade to connect with friends and neighbors and continue the community celebration.

“Whether you’re catching up with old friends, meeting new ones, or simply soaking in the energy of a great community event, this is your chance to stay, connect, and make memories,” organizers said. “Don’t rush home, the best place to be after the parade is right here at the Waterland Block Party!”
