Four Trumpet Camps, taught by Mat Montgomery, a longtime trumpet instructor with a Masters in Orchestral Performance, are coming this summer to the Highline Community College campus. This is a great opportunity for young trumpet players, newer and experienced, to hone up their trumpet skills. The first is the Summer Trumpet Ensemble, open to all trumpet players with at least some playing ability. This camp runs in the early afternoons from July 11-29, with a recital on Friday, July 29th at 5pm. “For this ensemble, I’ll arrange each of the pieces we play in four parts, then arrange each part to have three different levels of difficulty,” Mat explained. The next camp is the Fast Start Trumpet Camp for beginners. This camp is for students who want to start playing trumpet in band in the Fall. “The Fast Start Trumpet Camp goes over the basics of playing trumpet with a higher level of detail than students would get in beginning band. They will learn how to play their instrument properly from the beginning and set them up for success in band in the fall,” Mat said. This two week camp runs mornings from July 18-29, M-F, and shares the recital with the Summer Trumpet Ensemble on July 29th at 5pm. The next two camps are Trumpet Boot Camps, one for middle school and one for high school. Each has an intense focus on the fundamentals of trumpet playing. This camp will focus on developing new habits to replace the old ones and increase their playing ability. “The material for these camps will be the most recent Jr. All-State and All-State audition material, so that if students want to audition for the All-State Ensembles in the Fall, they will be prepared,” Mat said.
- The High School Trumpet Boot Camp is August 8-12, 9am-3pm.
- The Middle School Trumpet Boot Camp is August 22-26, 9am-3pm.
