Only a few dozen people turned out for a rally Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Big Catch Plaza, as steady rain, wind and cold temperatures kept attendance low, according to Des Moines resident Linda Pomeroy.
Pomeroy told The Waterland Blog that the weather during the midday rally was about 44 degrees with constant rain and wind.
“The amped up music, cameradery and quite a few horn honks and waves kept the group going,” Pomeroy said.
The rally lasted through the inclement weather, with those who attended continuing to hold signs and interact with motorists as traffic passed through the area.
Participants said the protest focused on opposition to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, which they view as an assault on democratic institutions, as well as broader concerns about imperialism.
