Life is good when you live in Des Moines. This week is National Farmers Market Week. Where communities all over the country are urged to visit and patronize their local small farmers and artisans. For many of the vendors, the markets are the only outlet for selling their products. Stop by and say hello and tell them how much you appreciate them being at our market. Here are the community groups for this week: Mt Rainier Pool will be talking about the importance of kids learning to swim and about how water-based exercise is a great way for adults and seniors to remain active. They will also promoting their first-ever Pumpkin Plunge set for Sunday, Oct. 26. Instead of kids having to trek to the pumpkin patch, they can come visit them where they will be tossing pumpkins into the pool (yes, they float) for the kids to retrieve. There will be pumpkin decorating stations, Halloween treats and entertainment, too. Admission will be $5 per person and they MUST preregister (so they can make sure each child gets a pumpkin). Access and Outreach will be giving out information on how to apply for assistance for the most vulnerable in King County. Music this week is the Fabulous Mojo King Blues Bandfrom 10-noon and Blues crooner PK Dwyer from noon to 2pm. If you think you have the best chili in town and want to challenge perennial champion, Dave Markwell. You can sign up your team for the last market day (October 25th) of the season, the 8th Annual Chili Cook-Off. You can pick up an application at the market information booth or check our web site and download an application. The Des Moines Area Food Bank “Picnic in the Park” continues their free summer lunch program for all school age kids. Look for them in the grassy area next to the marina office.
