The City of Des Moines announced this week that it will restore expanded animal control services beginning April 1, 2026, through a new partnership with CARES.
The updated services will include 24-hour emergency response, animal cruelty and criminal investigations and proactive animal control efforts led by a dedicated officer.
CARES will coordinate with the city’s Code Enforcement team, Police Department and legal staff to address animal related issues, the city said.
“Starting April 1, 2026, the City of Des Moines will have expanded animal control services again through our new partnership with CARES,” the city said in its announcement.
While services are expanding, some limitations remain. Shelter space will be limited to dangerous animals and those involved in investigations, and stray animal drop offs will continue to be restricted.
Residents who find a stray animal or suspect abuse are asked to call the non emergency line at (206) 878-3301.
