The first round of results were released for Tuesday’s (Nov. 7, 2023) General Election, and the initial leaders winning three seats for Des Moines City Council are JC Harris, Jeremy Nutting and Yoshiko Grace Matsui,
Harris is leading Back by 306 votes.

Rob Back had the full-throated support of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Des Moines, was endorsed by the Police Guild, benefitted from an expensive mailer purchased by the Washington Realtors PAC that’s tried to buy elections across the state (it’s unclear what they hoped to get in return here), and every lever of power in the City of Des Moines that could have been shifted in Rob’s favor, was.
If these results stand, JC Harris’s victory will be a clear and unambiguous rejection by the voters of business as usual in Des Moines.

I certainly hope so. And a shot over the bow for the Mayor and his enablers to throttle back their craze for development at the expense of those of us that live here.

Backs’s rejection in his last election sent that message. I don’t see any signs of Buxton or Mahoney reeling in their exploitation of the trust Des Moines voters have put in them. It appears it will continue until they are removed from office.
Rob Back stood for status quo and would have approved everything our CM wants. Trouble is our CM spends money like it’s water on half baked ideas and trumped up bills. We Des Moinians are sick of council looking the other way. JC doesn’t! He brings everything front and center.
