It took a while for the sun to show itself but, last Saturday saw the biggest crowd of the year – 7,000+ shoppers, gawkers, classic car buffs and lots of kids getting their faces painted, not to mention the many pets! People had food from literally around the world. The Knights Car Club staged a truly eclectic display of classic cars, the farthest coming from over the mountains in Selah. Lots of door prizes and trophies were handed out. The Market Foundation wants to thank the many people who ate Pancakes for breakfast and later stopped by the wine booth to pick up some potables for dinner that evening. With the wine sale going on, it was a record sales day. Keep reading Wanolitto’s blabbering to see when the next sale is in August. While at the booth don’t forget to pick up my Cooking with Wine Recipes. You can download this week’s recipe “Panko Crusted Cod with Spinach Pasta” by clicking here (PDF file). The market Board of Directors wants to thank all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly all day long to bring about this most successful event. The South Highline National Little League baseball team helped to make the Pancake Feed a huge success. Part of the proceeds will go towards their equipment fund. Food Truck Scene Skinny Phoenix, Jemil’s Big Easy, Fish Basket. To see when the prepared food vendors are at the market, log onto market vendors. Vendor Spotlight I pulled out my carving knife the other day to slice up some meat and couldn’t figure out why it was taking so long, duh! What’s the saying “can’t cut hot butter.” Solution: take knife to Bill at Cutlery on Wheels. He is hiding out in the little black trailer at the market entrance. Now not to cut off one of my digits……… Music Everybody’s favorite is back this week. Paul Hall and the Saltwater Saints will accompany you while shopping. Paul is the guy who always sings the National Anthem on our opening days that sends chills down your spine. Need a ride to the market seniors? Don’t forget the Senior Services Hyde Shuttle is available again this Saturday and every other Saturday thru the end of October. The July 13th market saw a large contingent from Fernwood at the Park and others for a total of 26 people taking advantage of this wonderful program. It provides door to door transportation to the market for seniors 55 and older and people with disabilities of all ages living in Des Moines, Normandy Park and Burien from 11am-2pm. Community Groups The City of Des Moines Public Works Department is back to the Market! This public outreach to the community will give citizens a chance to see firsthand some of the projects they are currently working on. It will also give Des Moines citizens a chance to ask questions about the upcoming ballet issue of raising the utility taxes to help maintain or streets. There will be different displays and a variety of equipment plus plenty staff to answer any and all questions. Please stop by and meet the department that works for you. Also back is the kid’s all-time favorite Highline MaST Center with their touchy-feely tanks filled with wild creatures from Puget Sound waters. Des Moines Friends of the Library will be manning their booth selling used books that support their reading programs. If you have any used books, bring um on down for a donation. Upcoming events Mark your calendar for August 10th, as our annual Health & Fitness Day where Des Moines local businesses present their specialties. Our annual Chili Cook-Off this year is on the last day of the market, October 26th. Don’t forget the Des Moines Area Food Bank “Picnic in the Park” continues their free summer lunch program for all school age kids. Look for them from noon to 1pm in the grassy area next to the marina office. Seniors don’t forget, if you qualify and are using the food bank you can receive a voucher for the market to purchase fresh fruit and produce, this program is paid for by the Des Moines Legacy Foundation, and distributed by the Des Moines Food Bank. I think that’s enough blabbering for a while!]]>
