Dear Des Moines Community,
As ballots for the upcoming November Election are being delivered, it is essential to highlight the perspectives of the dedicated police officers and staff who diligently serve our community.
The critical nature of voting YES for Proposition 1 cannot be emphasized enough. Citizen backing plays a pivotal role in ensuring that our city can continue to provide essential resources and services to uphold public safety standards and safeguard our residents. Your support displays an unwavering dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all individuals living in, visiting, or doing business in Des Moines.
It is worth noting that Washington State ranks 51st in the country for police officer staffing (Officers per 1,000 residents). Presently, the City of Des Moines falls below the State average of 1.29 officers per 1,000 residents, with only 1.05 officers per 1,000 residents. With violent crime rates in Washington State having risen by nearly 20% over the past five years, it is imperative to bolster funding for public safety rather than reduce it. Adequate funding will ensure a well-prepared and appropriately staffed police force that protects our neighborhoods and fosters a secure environment for all community members.
Chief Ted Boe recently issued a letter containing crucial details concerning Proposition 1. The letter also addresses some misconceptions regarding the actual cost of Proposition 1 and the potential impact on the community if additional funding is not secured. We fully endorse the information in the letter, as it is vital to grasp that all details are factual and precise, addressing the challenges the city is currently confronting.
Below is a comparison of current patrol staffing levels versus projected staffing levels if Proposition 1 fails:
(YES) Proposition 1:
- More Police Officers
- Patrol shifts fully staffed with four (4) police officers and a supervisor (24/7)
- Crisis Response/Social Worker
- Dedicated Animal Control Services
- Intelligence from Crime Analyst to support patrol staff
- Enhanced Neighborhood and School Traffic Enforcement
- Enhanced Code Enforcement
Vs
(NO) Proposition 1:
- Fewer Police Officers
- Reduced patrol staffing at night
- No Crisis Response/Social Worker
- No Animal Control Services
- No Intelligence from Crime Analyst to support patrol staff
- Minimum staffing to decrease to two (2) police officers and a supervisor
In summary, failure to pass Proposition 1 would result in fewer police officers responding to 911 calls. Reduced staffing levels would lead to increased response times and diminished proactive measures against criminal activity. Your support of Proposition 1 is crucial in maintaining the safety and security of our community. Let us stand together to ensure that Des Moines remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
Thank you for your attention and support.
